Function of the Posterior Hip

For the most part, the muscles of the posterior hip have similar functions as what anatomy textbooks say. However, some of them have very distinct functions. Take, for example, the gluteus maximus.

The body of a professional sprinter seems close to ideal, in my opinion. Now, this may not be the perfect body to maintain in times of caloric hardship (muscle costs many calories), but it is close to ideal when it comes to human function. Humans are not the fastest animals, but we can reach our top speed quicker than most other animals. We are not the strongest (ants can lift more than 10 times their body weight), but we are strong for our size. We also don’t have the most endurance compared to other species, but when trained correctly, humans can run up to 300 miles, or 482.8 kilometers, without stopping. Much of this can be attributed to the gluteus maximus and other large muscles such as the quadriceps. The gluteus maximus helps to extend the leg behind the body while also stabilizing the pelvis. In addition, the gluteus maximus is considered a “core” muscle due to its attachment to the pelvis and spine. This muscle should be large and powerful; unfortunately, it is commonly weak due to sedentary postures, dehydration, or simply a lack of understanding about the importance of training the gluteals.

In addition, there are also the Deep Six muscles under the gluteals, which serve as key external rotators of the hip. Their job is to first stabilize the leg in the hip joint and then to work to initiate external rotation as necessary. If the gluteus muscle is weak, then these muscles tend to do more. This may lead to compression of neural structures and other hip issues.
